God Behind Bars: When God Shows Up

There are close to three million prisoners now in the United States and that population is growing at a compounded rate of well over 2 percent a year. What will the future bring?

God’s prompting of the founder, Jake Bodine, and the skyrocketing number of incarcerated men and women in the United States has led directly to the creation of God Behind Bars. It’s a one of a kind prison ministry that asks:

“What if God showed up in prisons?”

Here are some of the features of what makes God Behind Bars (GBB) unique:

Unique four-step strategy that will allow a person to have full life change instead of some life change.
Partner with churches and faith-based organizations around the world to stream live, dynamic, high-quality worship experiences into prisons all over the world.
Online campus called “Church With Inmates” that allows the families of prisoners to see and experience the same service that their loved one is watching from inside the prison.
Next-generation aftercare program that pledges to walk with and care for each former prisoner who completes the three prerequisite steps. Among some things that will be provided initially by the ministry are temporary living quarters, groceries, gas, a cell phone, clothes, employment training and placement.
Project 22: based on Proverbs 22:6 launches in the fall of 2011 with the goal of mentoring and ministering to the children of inmates.

How to Ambush Yourself

When I was a kid growing up in Northern California, I was often bored out of my mind. My father who is a logger by trade often had creative ideas to cure my boredom. I recall a particular summer when he came up with the idea of building me a box trap. I could use it to trap birds, rabbits, and whatever else would like to eat peanut butter (this is a long list). The diagram below shows the best example I could find.

The end result was the trapdoor closing the victim inside the box. I was successful on my first attempt in catching a rather very annoyed “digger” squirrel. I brought the trap home with the rodent inside. My dad suggested I release it, which I did. I used the trap another time and the same thing happenend, might of been the same squirrel, too. The second rodent tore up the trap and it sat in my dad’s workshop unused.

This story came to mind last night as I sat reading Proverbs 1:

11 If they(the ones who do not listen to wisdom) say, “Come with us,
Let us lie in wait for blood,
Let us ambush the innocent without cause;

18 But they lie in wait for their own blood; They ambush their own lives.

Are you setting yourself up for an ambush? Are you someone who can be trusted?

Finding God Behind Bars #setfree

Hey everyone, just wanted to give you a heads up about a cool campaign that our friend Jake Bodine is doing! Jake is the founder and CEO of God Behind Bars. GBB intends to introduce prisoners to God’s life-changing principles, helping them turn their broken road of failure into a solid pathway of personal success. Here are some of the goals of GBB:

Restore prisoners to their families.

Help them build a strong faith foundation.

Fight addiction.

Lead prisoners to live for others and for Christ.

Prepare them with all the necessary credentials to live a godly and successful life both in their community and in their church that will bless others.

David Wilkerson Killed in Car Crash

David Wilkerson, author of The Cross and the Switchblade and founder of World Challenge Ministries, died in a car crash today, Charisma and CBN are reporting.

CBN reports that Wilkerson was 79. The church that he founded, Times Square Church in New York City, has more than 8,000 members. His wife Gwen, was also involved in the crash and was rushed to the hospital where she is said to be in critical condition.

In 2009, Wilkerson posted a message warning of riots, fires, and economic collapse in New York City. CT wrote at the time about why Wilkerson’s message received so much attention.

Wilkerson has more credibility and name recognition than many other online prophets. He is the author of The Cross and the Switchblade, one of the most popular books in evangelical history. (It ranked #32 in Christianity Today’s list of “Top 50 Books That Have Shaped Evangelicals.”) His Teen Challenge ministry is very prominent in discussions of drug treatment and social service partnerships between church and government. And Times Square Church, which he founded, reportedly draws 8,000 people weekly and is known for its many social service ministries.

Wilkerson continued to write blog posts until his death.

Update: Details about Wilkerson’s memorial service will be posted on Times Square’s website, which states that it will be streamed live.

David Wilkerson has been a top 10 trending topic on Twitter tonight, including tweets from Wilkerson’s cousin and Joel Houston, leader of the Sydney-based youth worship band Hillsong United.
